How did you get into debt?
School loans from undergraduate education.
How does your economic reality effect your art?
It greatly restricts how much work I can produce within a given year. It the ten years from undergrad to grad school I would on average produce one or two works a year due to the amount of time spent working to maintain food and shelter.
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
Yes. As an artist, to produce the work that follows a course of investigation only limited by the concepts and ideologies within that artist thinking there the cost is two fold. Not only is it the cost of keeping the space, facilities and materials available but, there is also the base living costs of eating and shelter. For me to produce work while working part-time at other jobs that covers my cost of living ever hour spent away form those paying jobs makes it harder to achieve the amounts needed to maintain the food and shelter and considerably restricts the money available for material and means to produce art at all, let alone without restrictions. I have to save money to afford the time and then materials.
