Remaining Balance Insufficient, Lifesize Manatee skeleton, 2015, Credit cards and welded steel, 60X120X26"
How did you get into debt?
I am in debt because I am consuming more resources than I am generating. To pay it off, I am on the extinction plan, in which my entire capital of life sustaining habitat is drawn down to wasteland.
Rat Patrol, 1979, poster of lifesize rat put around the city during garbage strike, to remind people that NYC is an ecosystem with a delicate balance, our waste creates habitat.
How does your economic reality effect your art?
Ironically it inspires my artwork, there are many parallels between nature and money
Boom/Bust 2010, cut paper collage 16X20" about fracking
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
The entire planet is in debt and will be for the foreseeable future. I want to demonstrate the parallels of environmental destruction and the crisis in credit, how we are borrowing from the future, not really knowing how much debt we can sustain before the finite world erupts, setting in motion an irreversible chain of events. We just don't know how close we are, unlike the banking system, habitat is not made by humans, and it's impossible to manipulate with numbers and percentages. Easier to destroy than repair.
"Swiped", 2015, Group of frogs made with green credit cards and steel, each one is 12X9X6" Its about borrowing from the future, not knowing where the edge of extinction lies
