How did you get into debt?
I attended a private art college in Milwaukee called the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD). I took out student loans to help pay for tuition. I also have a little credit card debt as well as auto loan debt.
How does your economic reality effect your art?
I'm poor. Plain and simple. It's hard to afford everything I need in life, especially when it comes to maintaining a studio practice. I still do, however. I don't currently work a regular 9-5 job, but instead have 2 part-time jobs that give me a little more flexibility so I can (hopefully) have more time in the studio. The financial reality of that however, is that I need to make more money somehow, and that's not going to come from my artistic practice currently. It feels like I don't have enough time to work the appropriate amount of hours to have enough money for shit and also have enough time to be making new work. It's just a constant struggle.
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
Yes, I think I would overall be able to make more work, work on a larger scale, and experiment with with a wider variety of materials. I don't think my practice overall would be incredibly different, but most likely I would be able to complete longer, larger, and more well thought out projects if I wasn't in debt.
